Bodhidharma was a Buddhist monk who lived in the 5th or 6th century and is credited as the founder of Zen Buddhism. The daruma doll is a depiction of Bodhidharma. The doll is round and hollow with no arms or legs – when tilted it always returns to an upright position due to its low center of gravity. Daruma are regarded as symbols of perseverance and good luck.
