Obis, or Kimono belts, became an important part of
Japanese clothing in the mid-1700s. Courtesans and entertainers
wore them to great effect, but it wasn’t until a kubuki actor, imitating
a young girl, came onstage with their obi tied in the back that
they became traditional style for all Japanese prople.
