Maruyama Okyo (1733-1795), also known as Maruyama Mondo, was well known for his true-to-life depictions of his subjects, which included landscapes, animals and ghosts. One story has it that he drew a ghost so realistically that it came to life and scared him. This print features an Onryo, or vengeful ghost. Most often they were scorned wives killed in favor of a new lover.
