Bongo People

Indeterminate Age

Stone

In the recent past the Bongo people lived in the southern part of the province of Bahr-el-Ghazal in the grasslands south of Sudan. The Bongo honored heroic warriors or hunters with sculpted forms known as Ngya, to insure that they were well received into the village of the ancestors. The shape of the markers range from fully naturalistic bodies to abstracted figures. Ngya serve to remind us that those who have gone before can still inspire, help and motivate us in the present.
