Helmet mask depicting Eshu

Has anyone ever said, “You must have an angel looking over your shoulder”? The Yoruba People of West Africa call this angel Eshu, and they believe he looks over the crown of your head. Known as the Guardian of the Crossroads, Eshu can clear paths and open doors, thus making anything possible. He controls communication and opportunity and is the first deity the Yoruba worship, appease, and thank, which is especially noteworthy at this time of the year!

This week’s New Arrival features a carved helmet mask of Eshu. Although this piece is one-of-a-kind, the concept represented by Eshu is not singular. If you practiced an eastern religion you might know Eshu as Ganesh. In ancient Rome, he was called Mercury; and in Greece as Hermes. The concept of some force opening doors is found throughout history. Here, people can thank whomever or whatever they wish – and that alone is reason enough to give thanks!
