Ammonite Fossil on adjustable mechanized display |
What will remain of today’s world in a hundred years; a thousand years; or even 100 million years? Apart from scientists and sci-fi enthusiasts, not many can imagine that far into the future. On the other hand, the imagination of most people is easily stirred by looking 100 million years into the past. Although there is no fossil record of the future, the record of the past allows us to see how creatures great and small ruled the earth before humankind was even born.

Fossilized Ammonite |
This week’s New Arrival features a real curio from PRIMITIVE’s cabinet – a large ammonite fossil. Before becoming extinct, it lived in the deep primordial sea where it moved by expelling water in one direction to propel itself in another, the real precursor to jet propulsion. Turn the handle of the display system one way and this specimen splits in two, giving information to the informed observer about how it once lived. Turn it the other way and it becomes whole again, letting us know real innovation occurred on earth long before ourselves.
