Green Birdwing Butterfly

Ornithoptera Priamus, or Green Birdwing Butterfly

What is the Butterfly Effect? Is it the belief the flutter of a butterfly’s wings can cause a hurricane on the other side of the world; or is it something else? The original theory proposed by meteorologist Edward Lorenz states; unpredictability is the only thing predictable in nature. It has little to do with cause and effect. Yet, there is another Butterfly Effect, which is totally predictable. It states, the beauty of a butterfly is inevitably appreciated when seen in person.

This week’s New Arrival features a Green Birdwing Butterfly, known scientifically as Ornithoptera Priamus. Aptly named for its bird like flight – in other words, it doesn’t flutter as much as it soars – it is one of the largest species of butterflies in the world. In the mountains of Indonesia, males like this specimen have brilliant black and green wings with golden undersides. The Butterfly Effect it evokes may be the only known formula predicting our perception of beauty.
