Where Good Fortune Rests

In 1781, the most senior adviser to the Qianlong Emperor ended his daily report with a flourish from a simple bamboo brush. Satisfied, he set the brush upon a carved jade rest and fondly began to reminisce. His childhood tutor had pressed the brush rest into his hand on the day of his Imperial Examinations with the promise it would always bring good luck. “Just remember” he said, “the brush represents your mind; the brush rest, your strategy for success.” That was in the year of the Ram; and since then he had learned the truth of his tutor’s promise.

This week's New Arrival features an antique jade brush rest. The two rams embody initiative, determination, leadership, cooperation, kindness and compassion – traits necessary for sustained success.  Each holds a Ruyi in their mouth, a powerful talisman capable of granting wishes. The Ruyi and brush support are embellished with stylized Lingzhi mushrooms, a substance believed to promote longevity. This piece is not an ordinary calligraphy tool. It is a guide to enduring achievement and good fortune for those willing to act according to its true promise.
