This authentic monumental Nimba mask from the Baga people of Guinea, West Africa stands over 6 ft. tall |
The True Measure of Beauty Open magazines like Vogue or Cosmopolitan and you’ll see young, thin models in various poses meant to idealize feminine beauty. In fact, look just about anywhere in the western world, at TV, billboards; even the sides of buses and you will see similar characterizations. Yet, travel to Guinea in West Africa and you will discover something entirely different. There, the Baga people celebrate mature, older women who they honor by having men dance one of the largest headdress found anywhere in the world – the Nimba – also called the great mask.

The Nimba is considered the mother of the community |
This week’s New Arrival features a monumental Nimba; so large it might have taken four fit men to hoist it over their shoulders so it could preside over a wide variety of ceremonies. Look beyond its abstract physical characteristics – the scarification patterns, braided hair, and full breasts – and you will discover an adult presence considered the mother of the community. Neither spirit nor idol, this Nimba conveyed the guidance and blessings of a wise experienced woman – which may be the truest measure of feminine beauty found anywhere in the world.
