  Ring with Buddha Eye Bead

Long before Islam swept over Afghanistan in the 7th century, Buddhism flourished there for nearly a thousand years. Yet, it wasn’t exactly the Buddhism we know today. Although monks and nuns may have formed dutiful processions, the religion they practiced was heavily influenced by Greek culture, philosophy and art. Known as Buddhism, it gave rise to the first sculptures of Buddha and certain types of adornment believed to have magical powers.

Ring with Buddha Eye Bead
The sterling silver and gold ring is set around a Pre-Islamic glass Buddha Eye Bead

This week’s New Arrival features a remnant from the lost Buddhist civilization of Afghanistan, a silver and gold ring set around a “Buddha Eye Bead.”  The name of the bead has less to do with Buddha’s eyes than with when and how it was created. Made from folded glass around 2,000 years ago, the eyes in this bead were believed to magically repel any form of evil or negativity. Despite centuries of change, it’s a belief that still exists from when it was made to now!
