River stone Buddha bust created by an unknown sculptor in Indonesia

When you think of the greatest sculptures of all time, what comes to mind? Is it Michelangelo’s 'David,' or Donatello’s bronze statue by the same name? Could it be 'The Thinker' by Rodin, the larger than life 'Venus de Milo' by Alexandros of Antioch, or the even larger Statue of Liberty by Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi? All these statues have one thing in common: they were created by known artists. Yet, throughout history countless unknown artists have left us a legacy of unsigned masterworks.

The sculpture is perfectly proportioned with a slight downward gaze

This week’s New Arrival features a bust of Buddha. Sculpted from river stone and collected in Indonesia, it is twice the size of a normal human. If it were attached to a body, it might tower over eight feet tall; but size isn’t the only thing making this piece impressive. Look closely at its serene expression and perfect proportions. Its downward gaze and slight smile suggest we can all find peace of mind. It bears no signature, only the hand of an unknown carver whose message cannot be lost in time.
