  The Roxbury Console

Classic Tension

Tension is a fundamental force found in nature and design. You can see it in objective differences such as smooth-rough, tall-short, and thin-thick; and in subjective differences such as good-bad, right-wrong, and yin-yang. Tension can provoke just about every emotional response except passivity, creating drive, not inertia. At its best, tension presents a ballet of opposites composed of materials, forms, and complimentary contradictions. It can be found in images and objects that are ethereal and transient as well as permanent and stable – and in this week’s New Arrival.

Featured this week is the Roxbury Console. This design merges opposing elements such as vintage and modern, natural and man-made, masculine and feminine, and historical as well as contemporary influences. The result is an absolutely engaging form of tension. Look closely at the console. Inspired by the windows of the Colosseo Quadrato, a modern structure, it can trace its roots all the way back to the arches of the original Roman Colosseum. Take four windows or arches, add a little tension by turning two upside down, and you have an instant recipe for a contemporary classic.
