Union Jack Crystal Clutch Purse |
In 1603, James the 6th of Scotland united the crowns of England, Scotland, and Ireland to insure his place in history and changed his number, not his name, to James the 1st. But it wasn’t this change that people remembered; it was his proclamation in 1606 introducing a British flag to commemorate the new union. Oddly enough, his proclamation gave no name to the flag. That was left to the commoners, who dubbed it the “Union Jack,” a jack being a flag that flies from the bow of a ship.
Union Jack Crystal Clutch Purse (detail) |
British ships carried the Union Jack all over the world, where it was planted on firm ground, which in turn, was promptly declared British. However, the Union Jack was never meant to symbolize union with these new lands. It was meant to portray a more simple union, being composed of a red cross on a white background for England, a diagonal white cross on a blue background for Scotland, and a diagonal red cross sandwiched between for Ireland.
Featured is a PRIMITIVE exclusive, a clutch covered with Swarovski crystals depicting the Union Jack. Carrying it does not suggest you should change your name, nor does it guarantee you can conquer new lands, but it will symbolize your union with high style and a sophisticated fashion sense.
