The Wings of Angels

What is an angel? Is it a benefactor who provides financial backing for a stage play or some other creative endeavor; an English gold coin issued between 1470 and 1634; or a “ghost” image on a radar screen? In medieval angelology, scholars described angels as something else. They were alternately a complete class of spiritual beings, messengers from God superior to human beings in power and intelligence, and intermediaries between heaven and earth. All those answers are accurate including more contemporary versions describing a person performing acts of good will and anyone who has a tattoo of wings on their back. These days, there are many ways to be an angel.

This week’s New Arrival features a unique pair of earrings in the form of angel wings. Designed and crafted in Bali, Indonesia, they are made from mother-of-pearl and sterling silver. Imagine how these earrings began their life. Composed of shell found deep at the bottom of the sea, they were collected, sorted, and graded based on their extraordinary iridescent qualities. Then they were cut, carved, incised, and polished before they were fitted to their silver caps. Yet first, they were conceived. Perhaps they were inspired by Michelangelo, who said, “I saw the angel in the marble and carved until I set him free.” If so, these earrings set free another alluring way to be an angel.
